The First Transcontinental Railroad was completed on May 10, 1869 at Promontory Summit, north of the Great Salt Lake. The final joining of the railroad was completed with a ceremonial Golden Spike. This Golden Spike is now on display in the Cantor Arts Center at Standford University.
