Utah is famous for “The Greatest Snow on Earth.” The snow here is ideal for skiing and snowboarding and draws people from around the world to Utah’s many ski resorts during the winter months. This “Greatest Snow on Earth” is a result of flotation - which happens when lighter snow falls on heavier snow. For skiing and snowboarding, flotation means that light snow has enough body to keep skis and snowboards on the upper layer of snow without scraping the base. To experience flotation, atmospheric scientist Jim Steenburgh says, snowstorms in an area must be frequent and ample, yet not too profuse. Utah is lucky enough to frequently experience these perfect “Goldilocks Storms” to get that world famous deep powder.
